Running an SME in Scotland is becoming ever more challenging. From rising costs to new technology demands, many business owners are feeling the pressure like never before.
Recently, our CEO Sheryl Newman welcomed MSP Jackie Dunbar to Appetite for Business for Business as part of a local business visit organised by the Federation of Small Businesses (FSB). The visit was part of a broader FSB tour designed to give policymakers a clearer view of the challenges and opportunities facing SMEs across the North East.
It was a valuable opportunity for open and honest conversation – shining a light on the realities behind the statistics, and discussing the kind of support businesses truly need to thrive.
What’s on the Minds of SMEs Right Now
SMEs are the backbone of Scotland’s economy, but the pressures they’re under are growing. During the conversation, several key challenges came up:
- Rising costs – From energy bills to wage increases and supply chain issues, everyday operations are getting harder to manage.
- Access to funding – There’s a strong focus on start-ups, but established SMEs who want to grow often feel left behind.
- Digital and AI skills gaps – There’s huge potential in tools like Microsoft 365 and AI, but many SMEs lack the time, skills, or confidence to take full advantage.
- People challenges – Recruiting and retaining talent is tough, and new HR regulations and costs like National Insurance are adding even more complexity.
“We speak to business owners every day who are doing incredible things under difficult circumstances,” said Sheryl Newman.
“They’re not asking for special treatment—they’re asking for practical support, clearer guidance, and a fair shot at making the most of digital tools that could genuinely change the game for them.”
A Broader SME Perspective
This visit was just one part of a wider effort by the FSB to bring SME voices to the forefront of political and policy discussions. With 98% of Scottish businesses classed as SMEs, the FSB continues to champion the need for better-targeted support-whether through digital enablement, workforce development, or cost-of-doing-business relief.
Colin Borland, FSB’s director of devolved nations, said the visit highlighted the value of innovative Scottish companies who are helping boost productivity and growth:
“Innovative firms like Appetite for Business for Business are crucial to the long-term success of our economy. It’s fascinating to see how they’re helping organisations harness AI to modernise and thrive, and what changes to the business landscape would help them do even more.”
That message strongly echoes what we see every day: business leaders who are ready to embrace digital tools like Microsoft 365, but need the right support and environment to make real progress.
Why Conversations Like This Matter
As a Microsoft Solutions Partner and trusted Cloud Services Partner, we know digital transformation isn’t just about rolling out new tech. It’s about people. It’s about helping SME leaders get clarity, reduce overwhelm, and unlock real business value through tools like Microsoft Copilot, Power BI, and SharePoint, without the jargon or pressure.
That’s why conversations like the one with Jackie Dunbar MSP are so important. When policymakers hear directly from the businesses driving our economy, it helps shape the kind of practical support that can really make a difference.
